Bhagirath Chaudhary Will the Minister of DEFENCE be pleased to state:-
(a) the State-wise/Union Territory-wise names of places where Sainik Schools are functioning in the country;
(b) the details of the criteria fixed for opening Sainik Schools in the country;
(c) whether there is any proposal for opening of new Sainik Schools in various States including Rajasthan and Telangana and if so, the details thereof and if not, the reasons therefor, State-wise;
(d) whether the Government is satisfied with the performance/standard of education of these schools and if so, the details thereof and if not, the remedial steps taken/efforts made for maintaining high standard of education in these schools during the last few years; and
(e) the details of the provisions for giving priority to the students passing from these schools in the recruitment of the armed forces?
ANSWER
MINISTER OF STATE (SHRI SHRIPAD NAIK) IN THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
(a) There are 33 Sainik Schools functioning in the country. State-wise/Union Territory-wise details of Sainik Schools in the country is placed at Annexure-I.
(b) Sainik Schools are established on receipt of a specific request from the State Government, which is required to provide infrastructure in the form of land, educational and residential buildings, sports field etc. The entire capital expenditure on land, buildings, furniture and education equipment required by Sainik Schools and a major portion of the running expenditure is borne by the concerned State Government/Union Territory Administration who are responsible for maintenance of buildings, roads and installations and for major replacements. They are also required to release grants-in-aid sought for additional requirements of buildings and furniture, transport, laboratory equipment etc.
(c) Yes, Sir. Status of proposals for opening of new Sainik Schools requested by different States is placed at Annexure-II.
(d) & (e): Yes, Sir. The Government is satisfied with the performance /standard of education of Sainik Schools. Sainik Schools have proven their utility by providing a large number of cadets joining the National Defence Academy/Indian Naval Academy/Technical Entry Schemes etc. The year wise number and percentage of cadets sent to National Defence Academy from Sainik Schools for last three years is as follows:-
